Harley-Davidson to Unveil Its Electric Motorcycle

Motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson has confirmed that it is getting ready to put its first electric motorcycle in the market. According to a report on Electrek, Harley-Davison introduced its all-electric motorcycle prototype in the Avengers series. That was four years ago. Announcing its fourth-quarter results, the company said it plans to put more investment into “the application of electric motorcycle technology.” And it’s expected to do so in a year and a half.

Still in Its Infancy

Company CEO Matt Levatich said the electric motorcycle market is still nascent. But, he said, electric motorcycles should help get customers excited and get more people taking to riding motorcycles. The company’s LiveWire project made a splash when it was first introduced in 2014. As a result of this project, Harley ended up producing several prototypes allowing individuals within the industry to ride them and provide feedback. It was, of course, famously featured in the Marvel Avengers movies.

The critical next step would be to bring the vehicle to market, but that hasn’t quite happened. The idea of introducing the vehicle in the market was likely to gauge consumer interest in such a product. The electric concept motorcycle had a range of 60 miles, which is far less than what other competitors such as Zero motorcycle have to offer. While the electric motorcycle concept might not fit with traditional Harley aficionados, it could introduce to the company to a completely new segment of the market that is into this type of technology.

Electric Motorcycles and Safety

While electric motorcycles are still being developed, there are a few things we do know and don’t know about these bikes. We know they can go pretty fast. We know they are quiet. What we don’t know if there any safety issues that are unique to motorcycles. Whether you are riding an electric motorcycle or one that runs on gas, the safety steps motorcyclists can take remain the same. You would still be well advised to wear a Department of Transportation-approved helmet. Wearing a helmet could significantly increase your chances of surviving a motorcycle accident and lower the likelihood of catastrophic brain injury.
